Preparatory Drawings, Prozac Zoo
Drawing has always been an important part of Harman’s process, particularly the relationship between analogue drawing and digital painting. The preparatory works for PROZAC ZOO often begin as physical sketches, loose marks and experiments in broken line before being brought into the digital space and finished, disrupted or reconstructed.
These drawings are rarely fixed. Harman returns to them, sometimes much later, bending the image, erasing sections, introducing new marks and allowing fragments from one work to migrate into another. A sketch originally made in preparation for a painting can take on an entirely new life, becoming the foundation for another rendition or a completely different work.
For Harman, preparatory drawing is not simply about planning a finished painting. It is a continuing process of testing, remembering and reworking an image. The analogue and digital constantly feed into one another, and the drawings often develop an identity and value entirely separate from the paintings they were originally intended to inform.
