Te Ōmutu o Paengawhāwhā Photograph, NFT
Just before dawn, the Ōmutu moon lifts from the Pacific horizon. In the maramataka, this phase marks the lunar month’s ending a stillness before renewal.
This work captures the rare beauty of the Ōmutu moon phase as it rises over the Pacific, moments before dawn. In te ao Māori, Ōmutu signals the completion of the lunar cycle, a time of pause and transition. The photograph’s dramatic gradient sky and scarlet clouds mirror that threshold between night and day, ending and beginning.
In my culture we use the sun, moon and stars to tell what day of the year it is. The sun tells us the season, the pre dawn rising of stars tells us the month and the moon tells us the day. So this photo also tell us what day of the month it is.
To own Ōmutu Rising is to hold not just a landscape, but a moment of time marked in the Māori maramataka, woven into the Pacific horizon.
