1/1: Untitled | From Dew Series
The photograph dwells on the moment an identity document, an archival record—is placed against the back of the neck.
The paper does not cover the body; it rests upon the skin, slightly offset, casting a short shadow to the left. Golden light sculpts the scene while the portrait remains in black and white.
The contrast is not one of style, but of time: a life already dated rests upon a body yet to be catalogued.
The back of the neck is a place without its own gaze; it cannot see itself without a mirror, nor does it present itself to view.
By placing the elderly woman’s face there, the image inverts the logic of the official portrait: the document—created to be read head-on and filed away—is now carried where the body cannot observe it. The child holds it up.
The past ceases to be a narrated memory and becomes a physical weight, a surface touching the skin. The number—a remnant of an identification system—loses its administrative function and takes on the quality of a transmitted mark: not tattooed, but simply resting there, both provisional and persistent.
Past and future do not merge; they coexist through contact.
The photograph suggests that lineage is neither a straight line nor merely a symbolic inheritance, but a material encounter—the face that once was and the body that endures, united by the simple gesture of placement.
That gesture can transform the archive into a place of permanence and the body into an archive that still breathes. | Alberto Oliveira
