Two years ago, I was the guest photographer for a documentary series on TRT-2, one of the main stream television channels in Turkey, focusing mainly on art and culture. I have appeared on 3 episodes and subject for one episode was "Childhood".
For one scene, we chose the Zeynepkamil Children's Hospital in Istanbul, a very well-known and historical medical care facility. It was the first time for me to see the inside of this hospital and it was a very emotional experience.
I have three kids and all my kids were born prematurely. The oldest daughter was born at 27 weeks and my twins, one boy one girl, were born at 32 weeks. They spent weeks in incubator care and put up a strong fight.
They have made it. My oldest has graduated from college and has her own house, her dog and her life. Twins are starting college this year. I am so grateful and proud of them.
During the shooting of this documentary episode, we were on a break and I was going around the hospital rooms and saw the baby in the photograph. He was very active in the incubator and raised his hand as I walked in. This was his hello. I spoke to the doctors and nurses and they told me he was about to be discharged to his home after weeks in the hospital. Another fight for life was won. I can imagine how he felt and how his parents felt and how excited they were.
I wish to dedicate this photograph to all of my children and to every kid held on to life.
