Brâncuși famously used modular, repeating shapes in several of his works. While his solid geometric hexagonal shapes stacked neatly one on top of the other, much of my modular forms are soft and fabric and thus become a bit of a messy pile like dirty laundry tossed in a corner when attempting to place one on top of another. My building blocks are also humans abstracted into dolls which mirrors the way Brâncuși depicted humans in his sculptures. They aren’t meant to look realistic, I dare say that they are even “cute” and instead of presenting the full figure he presents parts of the body, many times only the head. In my piece, there are numerous heads… just the heads… of these dolls that are solid in contrast to their soft fabric “bodies”.
I think of this piece as a kind of inverse of what Brâncuși is known for, which I attribute to our different worldviews, upbringings, and genders. This infinite, endless doll is meant to depict the stacking of femininity from my perspective, which means layers of burden, but an attempt to still look cute or pretty, and somehow still managing to stand straight and present oneself despite the mess.
