Carmine Crocco was an Italian brigand and folk hero who led a large band of outlaws in southern Italy during the mid-19th century. He initially fought for both Bourbon and Garibaldi forces before becoming a notorious figure in the struggle against the newly unified Italian state, spending approximately 24 years in prison after his capture.
