Smedley Butler was a highly decorated U.S. Marine Corps major general who served in numerous conflicts, including the Spanish-American War and World War I. After retiring, he became an outspoken critic of American military intervention, famously declaring that "war is a racket" used by wealthy industrialists to exploit poor people. Butler, who received more medals than any other Marine in his time, revealed the Business Plot, an alleged conspiracy to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt, further cementing his legacy as a whistleblower and advocate for peace.
