Joshua Abraham Norton, known as Emperor Norton, was a famous 19th-century San Francisco eccentric who declared himself "Emperor of the United States" in 1859 and later "Protector of Mexico." Despite his self-proclaimed titles, Norton was beloved by locals and became a celebrated figure in the city, known for his eccentric proclamations and benevolent demeanor. He issued his own currency, which was accepted by some businesses in San Francisco, and called for the construction of a bridge and tunnel connecting San Francisco to Oakland, ideas that were realized decades later. Norton passed away in 1880, and his funeral was attended by thousands of admirers, reflecting his unique place in San Francisco's history.
