Gregor MacGregor was a Scottish adventurer and con artist who is infamous for creating a fictional Central American territory called Poyais and luring investors and settlers to it in the early 19th century. His elaborate scheme, which promised a prosperous land that did not exist, is considered one of history's most audacious frauds.
