Kate Daudy, James Viggers and Kostya Novoselov are proud to present The Evolution Project. Trees in The Evolution Project are themselves generative artworks. They also aim to make proper use of the novel functionality made possible by NFTs to become much more than simple digital fine art.
On a visual level, the project initially builds on Kate Daudy’s long-established “trees” series. The artworks take Daudy’s traditional collage methods and materials into the digital space. The visual DNA of her physical trees has been identified, codified and incorporated into the new NFT artworks. Critically, the digital works retain the DNA structure from their creation, which allows for the future interbreeding of digital trees to create new “seedling” NFTs.
“Singularity” is a generative digital artwork of one of The Evolution Project's trees with a single leaf. The leaf is a crochet doily, the physical original of which was made by Syrian refugee women that Kate met through her charitable work with the UNHCR and whom Kate supports with her works.
Riffing on the work’s title, “Singularity” is our only first generation tree with the gene for one single leaf, and the only original containing the word Singularity. Our plan is also that “Singularity” will be our only first generation work for the Ethereum blockchain, at least until an improved environmental solution can be found. We care about trees, after all.
The doily image represents a galaxy spinning through space. It is centred around a pure black dot, representing the singularity at the centre of most galaxies (singularity being another word for a black hole, and art + science being a key part of what The Evolution Project is trying to do).
The backdrop resembles a radio telescope scan of deep space but is actually a digital image of felt – a callback to Kate’s physical collage works. The colour palette was inspired by Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and the red shifted wavelengths of light caused by the doppler effects of our expanding universe.
