The mining settlement in the Medio Campidano, which for a century was the center of industrial mining in the southwest and where today the Unesco World Heritage Parco Geominerario Sardinia is located. The Montevecchio mine is one of the largest and most impressive sites. The extraction of minerals in the Montevecchio area dates back to Phoenician and Roman times. In 1842, modern industrial mining activity began in the area. In its heyday the mining village was inhabited by more than 3,000 people. The Montevecchio mines ceased operations in 1991.
Today, Montevecchio offers vast areas reclaimed through mining and used for various tourist activities such as stationary and temporary exhibitions. The area is a meeting place and home to fairs, festivals, exhibitions and cultural events of various kinds.
