MARYLAND: Two Snakes

I watched two snakes have sex in my childhood backyard. Why? I have no idea.

During one of my scouting trips I brought my (now) husband to my childhood home. He hadn’t ever seen the inside of it so I gave him a tour.

Once we got to the big, back deck, I looked down and saw two snakes having sex.

I watched as they wrapped up in each other, slowly spiraling and becoming one. It felt spiritually significant. Bringing my partner to one of the most sacred places of my past, now watching this act I quite literally never saw when I lived there. I had to honor it in artwork.

We shot two Snakes right after It Will Never Be The Same. It must have been 1 AM at that point. The humidity was starting to break.

If you’ve never lived somewhere that wet, there’s a certain point in the night where it stops being humid. It gets quite cold.

I dressed up the stump with fake snakes. Remember, practical photographs here. The dead lizard was there already. It was so perfect.

The nighttime pieces are meant to represent a dream sequence. Did the narrator watch two snakes have sex? Were they just sticks? What was that? It gets hazy… and back to clear.
