Nia means intention in Swahili. The will to act, to change.
Lately I have been inspired by tribal tattoos and other body modifications practiced by native communities around the world. Admittedly, I like the permanence they demand- which implicitly requires some level of conscious acknowledgement of what a particular tattoo means to you. Art imitates life, and as nature would have it- form follows function. We usually get tattoos not particularly for how they appear, but for what they represent. We wear our symbols Tattoos also mark a stark line between choices and decisions. There's an infinite pool of things you could be, but it is not enough to simply be. You must become, and as such, our decisions speak volumes about our self awareness. Far more than the choices we had ever could. At best our choices and options only reflect our circumstances. Decisions reflect our personalities and character. Nia represents the will to boldly wear our symbols and enforce our will on ourselves and others. When we become truly aware of ourselves we can align properly with who we want to become- which in the grand scheme of things is the greatest service to others. The price of being is limitation, and the price of limitation is suffering. We suffer because we are limited. By reaching our full potential, we are in a better position to lift others out of struggle and suffering
