Lake Eacham, known as Yidyam or Wiinggina to the local Ngadjon-Jii people, is a serene crater lake nestled in the Atherton Tablelands of Tropical North Queensland, Australia. This pristine body of water, formed over 9,130 years ago, is encircled by lush rainforest and is part of the Crater Lakes National Park.
Lake Eacham originated from intense volcanic activity when rising magma superheated groundwater, leading to massive explosions that created a deep crater. Over time, this crater filled with rainwater, resulting in the clear, blue lake we see today. Notably, the lake lacks inflowing or outflowing streams, relying solely on rainfall for replenishment, causing its water levels to fluctuate by up to four meters between wet and dry seasons.
