The Marten and Oopjen Portraits: Portrait of Marten Soolmans, 1634 #9

Twenty-one years old, heir to an Amsterdam sugar fortune, painted the year after his marriage. Rembrandt gives him full length and life size — a format reserved for royalty and aristocracy, almost unheard of for a merchant's son. The rosettes on his shoes alone would have cost a labourer's monthly wage. He hangs on the left, turned slightly toward his wife. One purchase, two paintings.
