SAR arc is short for Stable Auroral Red arc The red light comes from atomic oxygen at about 6300 Å wavelength (a deep red) in the upper atmosphere/ionosphere (~400 km altitude) as a result of heat energy leaking into the ionosphere from the inner magnetosphere’s ring current system, rather than charged solar-particles precipitating like in classic auroras.
