Divers and researchers use a few techniques to "redirect" them without harm: Keep eye contact – Sharks are less likely to approach directly if you face them. Maintain calm, controlled movements – Sudden splashing or erratic behavior can attract curiosity. Use an object as a barrier – Divers sometimes extend a camera, stick, or fins to gently guide a shark’s movement without touching it. Redirect the head, not the tail – If a shark gets too close, trained handlers use a pole or flat object to lightly push the nose or redirect its path. Avoid cornering it – Always give the shark an easy exit path.
