When the Soviet Union was in transition towards the independence of the republics I traveled to Central Asia. The visa requirement was very opaque and I managed to travel for over two months on what was initially a 7-day transit visa. In Dushanbe a protest in favour of the Islamic Party brought out thousands. Oblivious to my presence, the protestors mounted their battle cry: Allah Akhbar."
