When I walked off the road into this coalmine in Northern China I started shooting immediately as I saw the miners gathered beneath a propaganda mural. It wasn't long before I was told by the powers in charge to leave the premises even though the miners liked being photographed. "They belong to the mine", the supervisor told me.
