Niagara Falls is actually made up of three waterfalls: the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls.
The Horseshoe Falls, which is located on the Canadian side of the border, is the largest of the three and is often referred to as the "Canadian Falls."
The Niagara River, which flows between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, is the source of the falls.
Niagara Falls has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, with more than 28 million liters (7.5 million gallons) of water per second flowing over the falls during peak season.
The Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois, people who lived in the area before the arrival of Europeans believed that the falls were created by the god Heno, who was angry at his wife and caused the waters to roar.
In the 19th century, many people believed that the falls had a therapeutic effect on the body and mind, and would travel to the area to experience its healing powers.
