The Wanderer Diary: Ego is the enemy not Egō

In Ego is the enemy not egō, the composition explores the tension between personal pride and the societal demonization of wealth. The title uses wordplay to distinguish between destructive pride (ego) and money (egō in Igbo). By placing Ryan Holiday's book Ego is the Enemy discarded on the floor, the painting identifies the true source of downfall. In contrast, the prominent gold watch presents money simply as a neutral tool and a marker of time, rather than an inherent evil. The figure’s relaxed posture on a familiar "LEGEND" crate and the playful, mismatched footwear featuring a smiley face motif serve as a nod to childhood remembrance and casual comfort. The partially concealed smile adds a layer of quiet humor, directly questioning the cliché that money is the root of all evil. Ultimately, the work suggests that wealth can offer time and ease, and it is only when combined with unchecked ego that it becomes something dangerous.
