David is a Renaissance sculpture. Made by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. It measures 5.17 meters in height (without the pedestal) and it is taken from a block of white Carrara marble which had been left abandoned after the failure of others sculptors. Michelangelo knew how to take advantage of the narrowness of the block of marble and circumvent one of its defects (a breach in which he dug the space between the right arm and torso). The work represents David, a slingshot (leather strap used as a slingshot) in the hand, just before his fight against the giant Goliath.
