Rachel Suzanne Tien Wood: Traditions at Binh Minh #1/10

Before the sun rises, casting a mesmerizing blend of pink, purple, and orange across the sky, the yellow sands of Binh Minh beach comes to life. Translated to "sunrise" in Vietnamese, Binh Minh reflects the feelings of hope and renewal—a time for reflection and embracing new beginnings. Even before the sun's rays touch the horizon, the narrow alleyways and shoreline are a buzz with energy, a vibrant dance of fishermen and locals exchanging the day's freshest catch.

At the heart of this spirited marketplace, I encountered women of all ages—from young women to wise grandmothers—masterfully negotiating, carrying hefty loads of fish, and mending endless stretches of nets. Their tasks demand physical strength, agility, and a deep-rooted understanding of the fishing business.

I loved watching the traditional blue round basket boats ferrying fish from larger vessels to the shore. Though charming and authentic, these precarious transports are at the mercy of the ocean's caprices, leading to a few unfortunate spills among the rolling waves.

Within the frenzy of the marketplace lies a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. The people of Binh Minh work together in perfect harmony, skillfully balancing cooperation and competition as they go about their fishy business.
