Masquerades (Mmuo) play a special role in most Igbo communities and the people have a high interest, regard, and respect for this cultural heritage. Masquerades are representative of dead community members who intermittently visit us for varied reasons.
The masquerades head (Isi) is an ensemble of the people’s art form. They are made from just about anything and the creator is at liberty to showcase their talent. The design of the head ranges from simple carved relief masks to elaborated fabricated head gears in 3D. Intricately carved, sculpted and painted, the masquerade head evokes different feelings to the onlooker and are generally a beauty to behold. The head is symbolic and serves as the identity of each masquerade.
