Reverie: She Was Alone, Not Yours

After loss or separation, a woman enters the court of animals alone.

The Stag offers her shelter. When she declines, he steps aside and leaves the door open.

The Cat promises tenderness, then begins to count what she owes him. The Rabbit advises her to cover herself, as though another creature’s conduct were hers to prevent.

The women nearby recognise the bargain the Cat is making. One has paid its price before. Another raises her wand and draws a boundary. They stand beside the newcomer while she speaks for herself.

“I came here alone,” she says. “I did not come here to belong to someone.”

The Stag bows. The Cat calls her ungrateful.

And the court learns to tell the difference between a kindness freely offered and a favour meant to purchase obedience.

She had lost a love, not the right to choose.
