Quad IV is a computer generated sculpture by the American artist Robert Mallary. Constructed in layers of marble on a wooden base in 1969, the sculpture was designed in TRAN2 with the Fortran programming language. Quad IV has since been lost. In 2023, the Robert Mallary Archive created a study of Quad IV by scanning a 1:1 styrofoam maquette that Mallary kept of the sculpture. This piece was created in collaboration with the artist Michael Lanzano and a seven-axis stone cutting robot. The "Matter and Spirit Quad" was exhibited at the Yale Center for Collaborative Media symposium Machine as Medium: Matter and Spirit.
By creating a new 3D scan of this sculpture, the Robert Mallary Archive has reimagined the artwork in a virtual environment. It is compatible with virtual reality and augmented reality for offline viewing, and a 3D printable file. AR versions of Quad II and Quad IV were debuted Art Golden Gai in Tokyo, Japan, in January of 2025.
