Always Has Been: Chapter 1: James Bruce's 1690 Mechanical Loom and the Resultant Social Unrest

In 1690, Scottish inventor James Bruce created a mechanical loom designed to enhance textile production efficiency. The introduction of this innovation led to considerable social unrest in areas dependent on traditional weaving practices. Skilled weavers faced the threat of being displaced by mechanization, leading to job losses and poverty in communities reliant on age-old textile methods. The societal disruption culminated in widespread labor protests, exemplifying the challenges and resistance innovations can encounter when they threaten established livelihoods.
