In 1705, English engineer Thomas Newcomen, along with John Calley, developed the atmospheric steam engine, a significant technological advancement. This engine was primarily designed to pump water out of mines, improving upon earlier steam pump designs. It functioned using atmospheric pressure to move a piston, driving the pump, and greatly facilitated deeper mining operations by effectively removing water. The Newcomen engine laid groundwork for future industrial mechanization and influenced sectors reliant on raw materials.
