"He who controls spice, controls the universe."

Everything has been going well for months and no sandworm has attacked even with all these vibrations. The Old Duke's son, Leto Atreides, was commissioned to control this successful work of the dunemans. The spice melange is removed from the sands of the planet Arrakis for consumption, which he looked upon with great love.

The mining process was a labour-intensive and dangerous process. Spice Harvesters collected the spice from the sand dunes. While the harvester would collect the spice, spotters would be on the ground and in the air, scouting for wormsign. Because of the rhythmic sound they made, they were regularly attacked by sandworms. If wormsign was detected, Carryalls would then lift the harvester to safety before the sandworm can attack.

Spice is only found on Arrakis, it is considered one of the rarest commodities in the universe. It is a symbol of wealth and status outside of Arrakis, and has highly addictive properties.
