French engineer, physicist and Nobel laureate, H. Becquerel was the first person to discover evidence for radioactivity. His keen interest in medical applications of this phenomena paved way to development of radiotherapy for cancer treatment. The SI unit for radioactivity, the becquerel (Bq), was named in his honor.
