Lise Meitner was an Austrian-Swedish physicist, who contributed to the discovery of the element protactinium. By bombarding elements, such as thorium and uranium, a production of isotopes and different elements was shown to be possible. The phenomenon of such splitting process was named fission and its principle led to development of the first atomic bomb and nuclear reactors. Despite not being awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, she received numerous awards and the element # 109, meitnerium, was named in her honor.
