Frederick Soddy was an English polymath, who mastered chemistry, nuclear physics, statistical mechanics, finance, and economics. Together with Ernst R. he discovered that radioactivity is due to the transmutation of elements. Throughout the process, he established that same radioactive element may have more than one atomic mass, i.e., different number of neutrons in the nuclei, and formulated the concept of an isotope. Through decay of radium, he was able to obtain a completely different element, namely Helium gas, giving rise to the first observation of nuclear fission.
