THE_VOID #10 :: HYPER // HARMONICS
This piece represents a sophisticated fusion of mathematics, acoustics, and interactive design, existing entirely within a single web document. It stands as a distinctive example of procedural art, meaning that what you see and hear is not a pre-recorded video or audio file, but a live simulation generated millisecond-by-millisecond by the browser’s graphics processing unit.
- Sculpting with Pure Mathematics (Raymarching)
Unlike standard 3D graphics, which use wireframes and polygons to build shapes, this code utilizes a technique called Raymarching. It does not define an object; it defines a mathematical formula for infinite space. The code sends virtual "rays" of light from your screen into a mathematical void, calculating the distance to a fractal equation at every single pixel.
This allows for the rendering of complex, shifting geometries—specifically "box folding" fractals—that possess infinite resolution. The visual distortions, chromatic aberrations (the splitting of red, green, and blue channels), and the "glow" are not filters applied on top; they are intrinsic properties of the light physics calculated in real-time.
- The 432Hz "Cosmic" Tuning
The audio engine in this piece is built from scratch using the Web Audio API, but with a specific, intentional deviation. Modern music is almost exclusively tuned to A=440Hz. This code explicitly calculates a mathematical tuning factor (432 / 440) to down-tune the entire soundscape to 432Hz.
In various audiophile and esoteric circles, 432Hz is described as a more "natural" or "cosmic" frequency, believed to be mathematically consistent with the patterns of the universe (such as the Golden Ratio). By synthesizing an "FM Drone" and a Pentatonic scale at this specific frequency, the artwork creates a sonic environment designed to feel warmer and more resonant than standard web audio.
- The Synesthetic Feedback Loop
The most compelling aspect of "HYPER // HARMONICS" is how it bridges the gap between user input and sensory output. It functions as a digital instrument:
Velocity as Expression: The code tracks the physics of your mouse movement. It doesn't just react to where you are, but how fast you are moving. It detects "strumming" motions against the digital void.
Visual Recoil: When a sound is triggered, the visual world physically reacts. The fractal depth expands, and the colors shift intensely based on the "energy" of your input.
This artwork is a self-contained universe. It demonstrates that with the right algorithms, a web browser can become a window into a living, breathing mathematical dimension. It creates a synesthetic experience—where sound has color, motion has resonance, and the viewer is not just an observer, but the conductor of the simulation.
