Lady Death, AKA Santa Muerte, though to the untrained eye appears to be a figure and symbol of death and darkness, is actually an icon of protection, healing, and a safe journey into the afterlife.
Santa Muerte appeals to an eclectic range of social classes but she is known to particularly draw in those in desperate situations; anthropologists have called those devoted to her a "cult of crisis." Devotion to her image tends to rise exponentially during times of extreme difficulty and hopelessness. Many of her followers with the most intense devotion are outcasts living on the outskirts of society, committing petty crimes out of desperation.
The cult of Santa Muerte continues to be one of the most rapidly growing new religious movements of the Americas.
