Title: 時の流れ (The Flow of Time) Dimensions: 4032 x 3024 Fluid Art
The title of my piece is a reference to 時の流れに身をまかせ (Toki no Nagare ni Mi wo Makase / "Give Yourself to the Flow of Time"), a popular 1980s Japanese love song by Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng and one of the most popular songs in Japan around the time of my birth.
I found new meaning in the song in relation to my artwork in the early months of 2020, as I was living in quarantine in relative isolation at my family's home in London, Ontario, Canada. For several months after the lockdown began, I produced a number of works which I sardonically labeled my "Pandemic Collection". Most of my works were sharp, angular, and done with great intensity as palette knife paintings. This piece represents one of the few times I stepped out of my comfort zone to experiment with a new medium.
In this piece I see unrelenting time, moving continuously towards an unknown destination; a force which we either flow with, or push against.
