In 1968 Aristid Lindenmayer introduced a model of plant development to the world. His "L-system" is a formal grammar, a language to describe branching growth.
These "creatures" are the expression of statements in such a language. They were grown from a single point by a process of recursive substitution. The drawing technique is very much like "turtle graphics", where a point is given instructions about where to move and what color to draw by the L-system.
This video of a recently discovered herd of evotree creatures is four minutes and nine seconds long, at 1080 by 1080 pixels, and at 30 frames per second.
