I envisioned this piece years before I even took photos at this location. I would drive by this motel all the time, so fascinated by the trees in the front and how they were so perfectly placed; yet never made the decision to capture the scene.
One summer day, with nothing to do, and a head full of acid, I called up my friend Brian. He decides to stop by and get me out of the house. We're cruising around town, stopping at spots to skate. A cloud of black smoke catches our eyes and we set out to find whatever it was on fire. While we’re driving towards the smoke, I see the motel. I asked Brian to pull over so I could finally shoot this scene. The day seemed so perfect and playful. A child-like essence is remembered about that day and I try to portray that in this piece. I like to think about all the instances leading up to the moment I took this photo, almost felt like it was meant to be taken on that day.
I consider this piece an ode to friendship.
