This piece was created in remembrance of Eritrean refugees and migrants who lost their lives in desperate attempts to find safety, security, and stability in Europe.
On October 3, 2013 over 368 migrants perished in the Mediterranean sea a few miles from the shores of Lampedusa after setting sail from Libya. Over 300 of these migrants were Eritrean refugees fleeing violence, persecution and poverty in their home state. Adequate amounts of life jackets, food, and water are not guaranteed when sailing North. Hope is all many carry with them.
Following the shipwreck, Italy issued a Day of Remembrance and Reception on Oct. 3rd, commemorating the souls lost their life making the treacherous journey North. The “Porta d’Europa” monument in Lampedusa remembers those who perished, and offers reception for none as Italy intercepts and returns migrants to Libya. As we commemorate the lives lost, we also remember the EU and Italian policies making it impossible for migrants to reach safety.
