Indo Futurism: The Message by Vimal Chandran

This artwork is a part of my 'Indo Futurism' series exploring the ritualistic art form 'Theyyam' . In South India 'Theyyam' can be seen as a vibrant art form that is very much presented as a form of resistance, a way to uphold the spirit of the protest from the downtrodden communities of the society! 'Pottan Theyyam' [Idiot Theyyam] is based on a mythical story of a meeting between the God in the disguise of a lower caste man and a proud upper caste scholar. Towards the scholar's enlightenment, God showered upon him the light of the prime knowledge of humanity – that all human beings are the same – no matter which caste, creed, gender or religion they belong to! This illustration is the reinterpretation of that epic meeting for spreading the message of equality. The old robotic character is inspired from the appearance of ' Pottan Theyyam' .
