Tono's face grew animated as he belted out the words he had written. The music, from two acoustic guitars, was upbeat, but it belied an angry and pointed message.
Hello, Mr. Ministers, Don't just sit there in your suits. Stop and think! Let go of your businesses, Think of the children on the streets!
Tono is 27 and has lived most of his life on Jakarta's streets. He and his friends, Bernard and Amando, known as "Jojo," make their living singing songs of protest for a little spare change. It used to be a fairly good way to make a living, Tono said. And he should know; he started when he was 7 years old, after his father died. His mother remarried, and he was essentially cast off to work as a roadside musician.
