Territories

In 2007 I had an exhibition in a gallery in Beijing. Territories was the first piece I created for it. At the time China was experiencing exponential growth in consumerism, property development and modernisation. The death of the hutong (traditional neighbourhoods) was relentless.

I used this body of work to examine the emotional consequences of contemporary living. Can we truly hold on to our traditional values while everything is driving us in a seemingly different direction.

Territories depicts this dichotomy; schisms, polarity, the in and the out, the cool and the sick.
