Période des Attitudes Passionelles is a digital sculpture, part of a larger series entitled Machines for Suffering that includes 3D printed sculpture, prints and video.

This body of work is the result of my ongoing investigation into female hysteria, a once-prevalent but now-discredited medical diagnosis that was applied largely to women. I 3D scanned a model as she re-enacted the supposed phases of an attack of hysteria, using drawings from the Salpêtrière asylum as choreography.

I used a 3D laser scanner that is not designed to capture the body. It damages even as it captures, creating a glitchy and fragmented scan. I then generated a network of tree-like supports to hold up her unstable digital body, suggesting a monumental structure under construction (or perhaps demolition…)
