The piece: A reminder that we selectively choose what we want to see, and the perils of remaining ignorant of our own history.
The underpainting features a collage made of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, The Soiling of Old Glory, taken by Stanley Forman during the Boston busing crisis in 1976. In it, a white protestor uses the American Flag as a spear against a black lawyer on his way to the office.
The underpainting features a quote from Ijeoma Oluo, “White people, I don’t want you to understand me better, I want you to understand yourselves. Your survival has never depended on your knowledge of white culture, in fact, it’s required your ignorance.”
