“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” — Elliott Erwitt
This is a portrait of model and actress, Emily Ratajkowski, at the CFDA awards in NYC, June 2019. It's a very meaningful shot to me for a couple of reasons. To start with, I have the utter satisfaction of knowing I'm the only photographer who got that shot, because of the access I had. Nobody else had that moment. Knowing that will always make looking at it feel more intimate to me. Secondly, it's an unconventional moment to capture of someone like her. Often times, everyone goes for the 'clean' shot, but I wanted to try and put my signature on something as simple as a portrait. Everything lined up perfectly - the wind blew her hair at the right time, the little ray of light landed right on her face, and then that perfect second of eye contact.
