For so many, basketball is more than just a sport. It's a lifestyle. It's therapy. It's an escape. And in the inner cities, a lot of times, it's a way out.
During the pandemic, I remember driving past all the parks my buddies and I used to hoop at growing up. Most of them caged up, inaccessible, or in this case, rimless.
It hurt to see. Not because I was planning on getting up shots that day; but because I know what basketball meant to me growing up and that there are countless others out there that it means even more to.
For kids growing up, basketball builds character. It nurtures communities and opens doors in places where opportunity is sometimes scarce. While I understood the need to enforce social distancing, it did not hide the sting.
To witness the city come in and tear the rims off these kids' pipe dreams, stings. I have to imagine the person making that decision, had never truly known love for basketball.
