This is a photo I took while scouting locations for a film. I used a Balda 6x9 folder camera from the 1920s. The film is Shanghai GP3 ISO 100 medium format black & white. I chose this combination to emulate films of prior eras, now discontinued.
I colorized the photo with DeOldify, an open source Linux project, coded in Python that uses deep learning to color both black and white photos and videos. For those interested, deep learning is a branch of machine learning, which in turn are both subsets of artificial intelligence. After colorization I did touch up the image, but I tried to retain any palette or aesthetic baked into the AI’s decisions.
