I head due East and drive until the sun goes down. The concrete and lights of the city are replaced with piles of granite and otherworldly trees, posing for passerby like models in Vogue. The hum of wheels on asphalt subsides for the dry crunch of rock crumbs under my shoes.
After hours in a car, stretching my legs is as sweet as curling into bed after a long day; restorative and homey. As far as I can see, cholla cacti are glowing from the setting sun. There is a warm, familiar breeze brushing my face as I walk down the seemingly endless trail beneath me.
The waves of clouds that had been swirling throughout the day take center stage in the night's finale, turning from an eggshell white to luminant shades of rose and magenta. As the golds fade to blue, I lead myself by the light of a headlamp; drawn further into the desert landscape.
