Piece #49 of 100
Portrait of a Mursi woman with her baby (Ethiopia). The Mursi are known for the lip plates, a form of body modification born during the "slave trade" period to discouraging merchants from kidnapping women. Today, most women use lip plates recognized as element of female strength and self-esteem. Every woman crafts her own plate and takes pride in including some ornamentation. The size of the dish indicates the social importance of the family.
