Rishabhanatha is the first of the 24 Tirthankaras(Saviours) of Jainism, a religion of India. His name comes from the series of 14 auspicious dreams that his mother had, in which a bull(rishabha) appeared, before his birth. He is also known as "Ādinātha" (Lord of the Beginning).
Legend also credits him with teaching men the 72 accomplishments (including writing & arithmetic) & women the 64 crafts(including pottery, carpentry, & weaving). He is said to have instituted marriage, the giving of alms & the observance of funeral rites. He had 100 sons, each of whom was 500 bow shots tall & 2 daughters. The most famous of his sons was Bharata, on whose name India got its name "Bharat". His another son Bahubali is also worshipped among Jains & famous for his severe penance.
His dynasty came to be known as Ikshvaku dynasty, the same in which 21 other Tirthankaras & Suryavanshis including Bhagiratha & Rama were born. He is said to have attained Moksha from Mount Kailasha.
