The new generation cicadas (i.e. Mark 7.2 upgrade 2.34.09.1 and later models) are encoded to spawn once every 4 years instead of the original 17 years, thus allowing the Company to gauge their assimilation rates within a shorter timeframe and make the necessary adjustments.
